12/23/2023 0 Comments Altered carbon resleeved![]() ![]() And yet, the one thing they forgot to fix was the awful story as this anime is, honestly, even more idiotic and incomprehensible than even the first season of the show. ![]() And, by making it only 75 minutes long, no one can complain about the film overstaying its welcome (unlike the first season of the show which felt absolutely interminable at times). Plus, it gets rid of Kinnaman, which is always a relief. For starters, it's cheaper to produce as you can do just about any kind of action you want in a film of this nature and its all just 1s and 0s. I guess turning the series into an anime film makes a certain amount of sense as it avoids a few of the troubles of the series. It was met by lackluster reviews and yet, instead of canceling the show like most broadcasters probably would have, Netflix doubled down, hiring Anthony Mackie to take over the lead role for a second season (that really wasn't all that bad, showing marked improvement) as well as commissioning an anime film to take place in the same universe. The first season was utterly boring, led by a tedious performance by Joel Kinnaman, headlining a series that was reportedly one of the most expensive the streaming service has ever made. credit, they really tried to make Altered Carbon work. With a constant slate of new internet streaming-based programming that updates all the time, Netflix has redefined what it means to watch TV and films (as well as how to do it). On the whole, I really enjoyed the film, it was a good and well-executed story within the universe of Altered Carbon and I recommend it to other fans. You have to give Netflix Originally started as a disc-by-mail service, Netflix has grown to be one of the largest media companies in the world (and one of the most valued internet companies as well). The relationship and dynamic between siblings really stood out to me in this movie, it was heart-gripping. Sometime along the centuries it eroded completely, which makes thinking of her in s1 even more painful. She still had some compassion in her after her betrayal in Stronghold. ![]() Reileen’s portrayal was interesting because it showed her as someone who still cared, the proof being that she helped the tattoo girl escape instead of killing her like she was ordered. I loved how the siblings met in this time period and worked together on this mission, how she realized he was her brother, but he had no idea. Even the enemy soldiers, ninjas in red armour were cool in a way and formidable foes that allowed Kovacs and his accidental help Gena to show off their fighting skill.Ī C-TAC character of Gena was a great surprise for me, but learning that she was actually Reileen made for an amazing twist. I also liked the AI running the yakuza hotel, he was like a Japanese version of Poe but with more customers and a human boss. Other characters were all distinct and well-developed, especially the tattoo girl and the main yakuzas. Not that it’s particularly important, I just think it’s cool that he wore a sleeve like that. He wore a white-haired anime guy sleeve, which we can imagine was Japanese (the face seemed similar to other clearly Japanese character designs). Kovacs as a character was recognizable and fun to watch. I also liked the references to s1 and s2. I think it just fit the world and the characters well, especially as it used Kovacs’ Japanese descent and history in a good way. What I really enjoyed about the movie was the blend of cyberpunk and yakuza climate of the story. I think the mystery and characterizations were well done, as well as cool twist that deepened a certain canon character. The story once again showed what kind of a messed up thing people can do in the society of immortals using the stack technology. ![]() The film possessed all the staple traits of Altered Carbon - great action, gore, and the climate. The fights were well choreographed and directed. I enjoyed the CGI art style and the animation. The anime movie made a great impression on me. He’s working for yakuza boss Tanaseda from s2 and he has a mission to protect a tattoo girl. It’s a prequel, set in the time period between the fall of Stronghold and Kovacs being put on ice for 150 years. After finishing s2 of the show I checked out the anime movie that came after. ![]()
